THERE is plenty of acting and singing talent in Furness and today's group of pictures from the 1990s feature some of the shows put on by youngsters from Walney Island.

Today's images are from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and an image from The Wizard of Oz, from 1996.

The Mail on October 19 in 1994, noted Walney Junior Amateur Operatic Society is presenting the favourite childhood tale of good versus evil, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this week.

"The 80-strong society has worked for several months under the direction of Nick Carson, assisted by Melissa Thompson.

"The story, by C. S. Lewis, is set in the 1940s when children were evacuated from their homes in the cities.

"Susan (Michelle Larcombe), Peter (Daniel McKeating), Lucy (Karen Shaw) and Edmund (Andrew Phipps-Jones) find a strange land through the back of an old wardrobe.

"The country has been taken over by the evil witch (Tabitha Hudson) and they must somehow defeat her with the help of the hero, Aslan the lion (Stephen Hughes).

Other characters in the show included Father Christmas, played by Duncan Jamieson; Mrs McCready, played by Emma Lord and Professor Kirk, played by Daniel Paton.

Last year’s musical show by Walney Juniors at Barrow’s Forum 28 was Oliver!

The leading roles were taken by Isaac Oakes as Oliver Twist; Grace Callaghan as Nancy; Jack Roberts as the Artful Dodger; Caitlin McIntosh as Bet and Toby Sainty as Bill Sykes.

Also in the 2018 show was Ben Sibbitt as Mr Bumble; Emily Smith as Widow Corney; Oliver Banks as Fagin; Ted Cubiss and Mathilda Kenny as Mr & Mrs Sowerberry; Oliver Gray as Noah Claypole; Hannah Lauderdale as Charlotte; Alfie Biggins as Mr Brownlow; Emily Wild as Mrs Bedwin; Christian Merritt as Dr Grimwig and Rebecca Fearn as Old Sally.
