EMERGENCY services including the coastguard and police have confirmed they were called to Walney Channel after eye-witnesses reported a major response lasting over four hours. 

Liverpool Coastguard has confirmed to The Mail that they were requested to assist with an incident which police logged at 11.45am today (Tuesday April 23) in Walney Channel. 

Barrow's lifeboat crew has confirmed they were tasked to the area at 1.35pm.

The Mail understands a number of police vehicles were seen from the Teasdale Road area of Walney. 

The coastguard was unable to provide any further information and said police were leading the investigation.

The Mail has tonight (11pm on Tuesday April 23) contacted the force incident manager at Cumbria Police, who responds to requests from the media out-of-hours, who was unable to speak to us or provide any further information.

Eye-witnesses said police and the coastguard were at the scene for at least four hours.
