FROM learning about how Barrow became one of Britain’s major shipyards, the children were asked about their knowledge on how certain sites around the town came to be.

These sites included Cavendish Dock named after William Cavendish - Duke of Devonshire, and Buccleuch Dock, named after former Barrow resident Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch.

As well as taking in the history of Barrow’s Victorian era, one child in particular, Abigail, shared some of her knowledge with the group.

She said: “BAE used to be called Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering not too long ago.

“There was a time when women weren’t aloud to work there.”

Faith stated what she was looking forward to learning during the 10-week programme.

She said: “I want to know more about the docks and why people came to Barrow all those years ago.”

One part of the Mrs Jepson’s presentation really captured the imagination of every child and that was how many children Queen Victoria had.

Ella from Vickerstown Primary School, said: “I want to know why Queen Victoria had nine children.

“Also, my dad works at BAE Systems so I want to know more about his company’s history too.

“I’d like to learn about it so I can talk to him about his job.”
