THE Railway and Canal Historical Society will be based in Barrow for several days for a series of talks, meals and outings and has extended an open invitation to Furness people to two of its events.

Barrow's Geoff Holme will give two talks at the Forum, on Duke Street, on Thursday, April 25.

All are welcome and there is no need to book a place.

The first presentation starts at 1.55pm and is called A Tour of the Railways of Barrow.

Using photographs from the collection of the late Dr Michael Andrews, this talk will describe the railways of the town in the 1950s and 1960s.

At 3.55pm, the second talk is called an Edwardian Lakeland Tour.

This presentation draws on photographs from both the Andrews’ and the speaker’s own collections to recreate a popular Edwardian tourist attraction called the Furness Railways’ Outer Circular Tour.

This was a day tour, by steamer, train and charabanc, starting from Fleetwood and taking in Furness Abbey, Windermere and Coniston.
