The community showed their support for people dealing with cancer at a glitzy bash in Barrow, on Friday night.

CancerCare held its inaugural Keeping Good Company Ball at the Abbey House Hotel which saw more than 130 people from companies across South Cumbria raise more than £4,300 for the charity.

Attendees enjoyed a three-course meal and an evening of entertainment provided by the Lakes Wedding Magicians and local Americana band Sugarfoot.

The event was hosted by CancerCare founder Professor Malcolm McIllmurray and the highlight of the evening was the chance to win a Mercedes car courtesy of a special roll-a-dice competition from Matt Johnson Prestige.

There was also an auction of unique items including a signed Manchester United FC shirt which alone raised £400 for the charity.

The event was organised by CancerCare Head of Fundraising Emma Athersmith who said the night was a great success.

She said: “It was a wonderful evening and it was lovely to see everyone having such a good time and showing their support for the work we do for the community.

"I’d also like to thank everyone who gave up their time or donated prizes to help make the event such a success.

"We raised an amazing amount of money on the night and it will help us make a real difference to the lives of local people.”

The Keeping Good Company scheme aims to give businesses the chance demonstrate their corporate and social responsibility by supporting an independent charity dedicated to helping people affected by cancer and other life limiting conditions.
