TREES are in the spotlight at the next meeting of Barrow Civic and Local History Society.

It starts at 2pm on Friday, April 26, at the Trinity Church Centre, Abbey Road .

The guest speaker will be Paul Littlewood with the title, Standing up for Trees.

All are welcome and admission, including refreshments, is £2.50 for members and £3 for visitors.

It will look at the history of the Woodland Trust, which was formed in 1972 by Kenneth Watkins in Devon and is now the largest UK woodland conservation charity.

He will look at the issues affecting trees, from disease and pests to development.

It will look at the positive work done by the Woodland Trust in creating, protecting and restoring woodland and stressing the benefits that trees and woodland offer to people and the community.

There will be information about local woods and how people can get involved with the Woodland Trust.
