SOUTH Cumbrians will get the chance to listen to one of the areas most renowned young talents as she takes to the airwaves this weekend.

Jess Gillam, 20, the talented saxophonist from Ulverston will become the youngest ever Radio 3 presenter when she appears as the host of ‘This Classical Life’, a new Radio 3 show which is launching on Saturday April 6.

Amongst those happy to hear Jess take to the airwaves this weekend is her family, who own Gillam Tearoom in Ulverston.

Her father, Doug Gillam, said they were all excited to hear Jess this weekend.

He said: “We’re looking forward to listening at work and in the kitchen.

“We might even put it on in the cafe.

“It is great achievement for her and adds another string to her bow.

“It is great for her and good for them, I think it is a good match.”

Radio 3 listeners will be able to listen along with Jess as she talks to other young musicians and discuss their favourite pieces of music from across the musical spectrum, giving an insight into the musical influences on young performers.

Guest already confirmed to appear on the new show include 22 year-old pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, double bassist Sam Becker, former BBC Introducing pianist and sound artist Belle Chen, and film and television composer Ollie Howell.

This Classical Life will immediately precede Radio 3’s popular Saturday lunchtime programme Inside Music, giving audiences the unique opportunity to hear from different musicians on Radio 3 every Saturday, all sharing their own insights and perspectives on their favourite music.

2019 has been a busy year for Miss Gillam already.

The former BBC Young Musician finalist announced her debut album Rise will be released on April 26.

Rise is a collection of pieces which showcase her phenomenal talent and diverse musical taste.

Jess is also renowned for her passion for music education.

Earlier this year, she performed at the BAFTA's and she also wrote an open letter to The Guardian, calling on politicians to support investment in music at schools in an effort to help children be more interested in learning more about the arts.
