THE cultures of the world — and particularly that of Thailand — were put in the spotlight back in January 2007.

Youngsters at St George’s CE School, Barrow, found out about life in Thailand during a cultural day, during which the school was visited by Song Jackson.

Headteacher Elaine Kent said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed it. It was such a good opportunity."

There was also a Thai cooking workshop held with Year Nine students at Alfred Barrow School, Barrow.

This was a joint project with the Furness Multi-Cultural Community Forum and the Barrow Excellence Cluster Partnership.

Cooks Wanna Houghton and Jirawadee Henderson shared their expertise and a workshop with pupils, including the preparation of chicken fried rice.

The Mail, on Saturday, January 20, noted that cultural diversity had been promoted in Furness schools during A Week With A Difference.

Barrow Island Primary School and Ramsden Infant School both celebrated the culture of the Philippines.

Ormsgill Primary School and North Walney Primary School welcomed visitors from Kosovo and Albania.
