MILLIONS of pounds has been spent on National Lottery projects in Furness in the past 20 years and it got a major boost from a seminar held at Barrow's Forum 28.

The Mail, on November 19 in 1999, noted that representatives of 150 organisations attended the event to find out how they could share in cash for good causes and special heritage and community projects.

By 1999, a total of 66 organisations in Barrow and South Lakeland had benefited from lottery funding — but the National Lottery Charities Board was keen to encourage more to apply.

The National Lottery's regional manager Andy Freeney said: "We are holding this conference because we are concerned that Barrow does not regularly feature on our list of successes."

Experts were on hand to answer questions and give advice on how to apply for grants, including how to plan and cost a project.

Barrow mayor Jean Waiting said: "The conference has been absolutely fantastic.

"I am hoping to do a showcase showing the important work the voluntary organisations do for the town."
