WITH millions of tourists flocking to the Lake District every single year there is also plenty on offer here in Barrow to attract many visitors and to entertain many residents.

From Furness Abbey to the Dock Museum, from South Walney Nature Reserve to The Forum - there are so many things on offer.

Take Furness Abbey for example, even since it has fallen into ruin it still inspired one of the countries most celebrated poets, William Wordsworth.

Today’s visitors can see the remains of the east end and west tower of the church, the ornately decorated chapter house and the cloister buildings as well as an exhibition about the history of the abbey.

Anyone hoping to experience the natural world need not travel far with South Walney Nature Reserve only on the doorstep.

With stunning views across Morecambe Bay, this shingle island reserve is full of interest and is also home to the only grey seal colony in Cumbria, which has only recently recorded record numbers.

Piel Island also lies half a mile off the southern tip of the Furness Peninsula and is the location of the English Heritage-owned Piel Castle.

The Dock Museum is also a very popular location with 120,000 visiting in a year. Most of its exhibits concern the history of the town, focusing on the shipbuilding industry at VSEL, (now BAE), the steelworks industry, of which Barrow once had the worlds largest, the Furness Railway and the World War II bombings of the town.

On the outskirts people can also visit South Lakes Safari Zoo in Lindal home to over 1,000 of the rarest and most endangered animals in unique natural environments offering visitors a chance to wander amongst kangaroos, wallabies, and emus.

Theatre and musical lovers also have The Forum which offers a diverse range of events, activities and exciting entertainment to Barrow welcoming internationally renowned performers alongside local dance and amateur groups.

Barrow's town centre is also home to some national high street retailers and a range of independent shops and Barrow's Market is also increasingly becoming popular following recent success.
