A MAN has called for Barrow Borough Council to make more effort to inform residents on what can be recycled rather than just refusing to empty bins.

Michael Larner, of Delhi Street, Walney, said his recycling bin was not emptied and there was no reason given at the time.

He said a label was left saying at hadn’t been collected, but it wasn’t until he rang the council he was told it was because labels had been left on the plastic containers.

Mr Larner said he had been unaware of this rule and the council told him they had sent out 2,000 letters to residents.

Mr Larner questioned why only 2,000 letters were sent out when more than 60,000 people live in Barrow.

He also said: “If the council are leaving stickers saying the bins aren’t being collected, why don’’t they leave one explaining why.”

He said the council collected the bin eventually and gave him a leaflet on what could be recycled.

He said: “It’s all very well sending it now, but we needed it before they refused to take the bins away.”

Mr Larner expressed concern for other members of the public who may not be aware and will also be left with overflowing bins.

Alec Proffitt, Barrow Councillor and member of the scrutiny committee waste working group, said: “The committee have been tackling the problems residents have been having with the recycling service and I can only apologise to residents.

“We have asked officers to review the service and ensure there is more clarity on what can be recycled, how they’re presented and how residents will be informed if they present the wrong materials.

“It is envisaged this will be communicated to residents once the review is complete.

“In the meantime I urge residents to check on the borough council’s website, or with our customer service team, if they are in doubt.

“We need to ensure we are communicating more effectively with residents and sincerely thank residents for their efforts.

“We appreciate continued patience whilst we resolve these issues.”
