VOTERS are being reminded that elections are due to be held for Barrow Borough Council in May.

All 36 seats on the council are up for election on Thursday, May 2.

Thirteen wards will be contested including Walney north and south, Barrow Island, Hindpool, Barrow central, Ormsgill, Parkside, Risedale, Hawcoat, Newbarns and Roosecote.

There will also be elections for candidates representing Dalton north, which includes Askam, Ireleth, Marton and Lindal, and Dalton south.

Jon Huck, the council's electoral registration officer and returning officer, said in most wards it will mean that electors can vote for up to three candidates.

In the Barrow Island ward, a vote can only be cast for one candidate and in central ward a vote can only be cast for two candidates.

An election of town councillors for several wards in Dalton with Newton Town Council will take place if the seats are contested. Parish councillors for the Lindal and Marton Parish Council and the Askam and Ireleth Parish Council will also be held if sufficient numbers of people stand for election.

Mr Huck said: "Electors are asked to carefully check their poll cards when they are delivered to them by the end of March or early April, about where they will be able to cast their vote.

"The polling station name is clearly printed on every poll card for every elector eligible to vote on polling day. Any elector who thinks they cannot get to their designated polling station on polling day can apply to vote by post by completing and returning an application form to electoral services at Barrow Town Hall by no later than 5pm on Monday, April 15.

"Alternatively, proxy vote applications can be returned by no later than 5pm on Wednesday, April 24. Anyone who finds they are not registered to vote has until Friday, April 12 to make an application to be included on the register of electors which will be used on polling day."
