Pupils from two schools put their knowledge to the test in an intense battle of the brains.

Ulverston Victoria High School (UVHS) faced Cartmel Priory School on Wednesday night in the Top of the Form semi-finals which tested students’ knowledge of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Organised by a group of higher apprentices, graduates, and high potentials from BAE Systems Submarines, the popular radio quiz show uses a series of quick fire quiz rounds and practical challenges to put the secondary school pupils head to head.

Ulverston Victoria High School’s development coordinator Charlotte Bower praised her team’s unwavering effort.

She said: “It was a closely-fought contest with exceptional performances from both teams.

“Every student who has competed should be very proud of their achievement.

“It is a highly competitive event testing students’ knowledge across a wide range of specialisms including Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Maths.”

Cartmel initially took the lead in the contest, with UVHS creeping back up the scoreboard in the anagram round, leapfrogging them into the lead.

However, Cartmel secured their victory by creating a four blade turbine capable of lifting 15 weights in the engineering challenge.

During the next two rounds Ulverston closed the gap on the Cartmel lead but in the end were eight points shy of the Cartmel team's final score.

Ms Bower added: “We are incredibly proud of the students and their performance and wish Cartmel the very best of luck in the Final.”

Cartmel’s win will grant them a ticket to the highly-anticipated final against Chetwynde School, who defeated St Bernard's.

It will be held at The Coronation Hall in April.
