Residents living in a notorious area for fly-tipping and rubbish pile-up feel 'disgusted' and 'concerned' as their litter troubles go unsolved.

A concerned resident from Cross Street in Barrow felt compelled to seek council action after she allegedly discovered syringes and piles of rubbish near her house.

She said: "A fortnight ago, there were loads of syringes at the back of Cross Street just lying on the floor, it's disgusting.

"It's a serious health and safety risk for young children."

Another Cross Street resident, Caitlin Worsley, said: "I've found used sanitary towels and medication on the road.

"Although it is cleaned by the council two or three times a week, the rubbish piles up so quickly.

"My bin has been stolen three times, it's a nightmare, I would never let my kids play out there."

Councillor Alec Profitt, said: "Back street fly tipping and irresponsible handling of household waste are an absolute blight on our streets and cost the tax payer a fortune in extra resource.

"There is absolutely no excuse for people to behave in this manner."

Steve Herbert, headteacher of St George's C of E Primary School, which is situated opposite Cross Street, said: "This road has been an ongoing issue where we work with the council.

"It's not every resident. It appears to be an issue with a minority of people."
