THE costumes of the Tudor age helped pupils at Urswick Grammar School say goodbye almost 25 years ago to a building which had provided village youngsters with an education since the reign of Elizabeth I.

It closed in July 1994, ready for a merger with Aldingham and Dendron schools at a new Low Furness School at Great Urswick.

The Mail, on July 12, noted: "Old school day memories were swapped as villagers gathered to view Urswick Grammar School for the last time.

"The school put on a special exhibition showing the history of the school through pictures and the writing of ex-pupils.

"Many of the present pupils are the third or fourth generation of local families to go to the school."

The school got its grammar school charter in 1585.

Although it has grown in size since the reign of Elizabeth I, it has always remained on its original site.

Among those to attend the final event was Frances Seward (nee Sharp), then 70, who said: "I had nine brothers and sisters who went to this school."
