ALY Bain and Phil Cunningham have become a national institution with their incomparable mastery of fiddle and accordion, taking their excellence in traditional music to venues far and wide.

Tomorrow night the tuneful titans will be performing at Ulverston as guests of Furness Tradition.

FT's Gordon Jones said they have always sought to bring the best of traditional music to the area: "It’s a total joy and privilege to be able to bring Aly and Phil to the Coronation Hall.

"They have influenced and encouraged generations of young musicians and been at the very centre of Scots music throughout their very long careers. They are masters of their craft, experts in all aspects of their national music while being extremely personable entertainers."

For Aly and Phil it all started though in 1988, when the lads, respective members of two of Scotland’s leading bands, The Boys of The Lough and Silly Wizard, worked together on a television series.

They enjoyed performing together so much that they decided to have a small tour that year. That was the beginning of a remarkable working relationship and friendship that has endured and continued to thrive taking them all over the world.

Individually they pursue other ventures in performance, television and education. It is when they tour together that they truly shine with more than a quarter of a century of well-honed skills and hilarious banter delighting audiences everywhere.

Both have many other strings to their bow.

Phil is artistic director of Scottish Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and had the wonderful opportunity in 2014 to perform at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony alongside Nicola Benedetti. Phil has arranged and co-produced tracks on Nicola’s album Homecoming.

Meanwhile, Aly, was honoured by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013 with a Lifetime Achievement Award and his world acclaimed Transatlantic Sessions went to network in the USA in 2014. He's also won countless music awards, including a writer’s Grammy and, with Bonnie Raitt, multiple gold, silver and platinum albums. Box office 01229-587140.
