MANY Barrovians will have fond memories of taking a dip in Barrow's Abbey Baths — but few will have tried aquatic disco dancing.

It was all part of sessions held as part of the Barrow Playscheme, finding things for youngsters to enjoy during the school summer holidays.

The Mail, on August 23, in 1990, noted: "The disco was so popular that the organisers had to have two separate sessions of 45 minutes, each attended by more than 60 children.

"The shallow end of pool was for disco dancing in the water, to music by the playscheme's resident DJ Tony Pritchard."

It was noted: "The dancing also spilled over to the poolside."

Playscheme attendant Clare Maddison said: "To start with, the kids were a bit apprehensive about the disco dancing, but then they really joined in, especially with the conga around the pool."
