RAIL operator Northern has introduced cheaper rail fares for passengers in the county.

The 25 per cent off discount for certain off-peak services comes following periods of disruption on Cumbria's railways.

It means a return ticket between Carlisle and Barrow cost £13 rather than £17.40.

Community leaders across the county have welcomed the discount as a sign the train company was listening to campaigns for better rail services.

The announcement came after Northern told South Lakeland District Council the Furness and Lakes Lines would be the first in the country to get brand new trains.

South Lakes MP Tim said: "After a shocking year on the railways, it’s great to see Northern realise that they can’t keep taking passengers in south Cumbria for granted.

“News of cheaper fares and new trains shows that our community campaign and constant pressure on rail bosses for a better service is working. But it’s also testament to the tireless work of our local rail user groups who provide a first-class service fighting for passengers all year round."

Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock said: “This is a move in the right direction for Northern Rail alongside improved efficiency in recent months and the suspension of the strike. Northern is clearly trying to gain back the trust of passengers but there is still a long way to go after the dreadful past couple of years."

Craig Johnston, the Carlisle-based relief regional organiser for the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union, said: "I would welcome any discount that makes the railways more accessible for passengers in Cumbria but I still think overall, rail fares are too expensive."

A spokesman for Northern said: “Customers in Cumbria faced particular difficulties following the introduction of the May 2018 timetable and we have introduced this discount to give something back – and to encourage more people to explore the county."

Discounts are available between Barrow and Carlisle, Barrow and Lancaster and Oxenholme and Windermere until April 6.
