CIVIC leaders gave it their best shot as tenpin bowling returned to Furness almost 20 years ago.

The Mail, on Monday, May 10, in 1999, noted: "Barrow Superbowl was officially opened by Barrow and Furness MP John Hutton and the mayor of Barrow Mary Irwin.

"Specially selected guests spent Friday night bowling and enjoying the facilities, including a bar and restaurant.

"The Superbowl opened to the public today at 10am and will close at 11pm each night."

The following day, The Mail recorded that school pupils from Parkview, Askam, St Pius X and Walney had been invited to a free game and refreshments.

On July 2 it was noted: "Barrow Superbowl has brought the fun of tenpin back to Barrow for the first time in over 20 years."

The facility had 24 air-conditioned lanes, fitted with a computerised scoring system.

Sales and marketing manager Sue Pritchard said: "The new centre is an excellent attraction for the community."

Back on February 17 it was noted that the bowling alley at Hollywood Park would create 40 jobs.

The new Barrow venue was to be bigger than the Morecambe Superbowl, owned by the same firm.
