North Walney Primary School had a new play area for its nursery pupils in 1996 thanks to the fundraising efforts of several groups.
The Mail, on October 26, noted: "The school, parents and the local community association all worked hard to raise funds to pay for the play area — nicknamed 'The Patio' by pupils.
"And Cumbria County Council, through its under-fives committee, weighed in with the cash to buy play equipment and furniture such as a pull-along cart in which the children can travel in style."
Trying our the play area were governor Kevin Hamilton, councillor Jane Murphy and fundraiser Pam Charnley.
