BAKERS proved themselves at a special cake competition.

The best bakers in the borough came along to raise awareness of mental health at the Great Furness Bake Off.

More than 100 people gathered at Hawcoat Park in Barrow on Sunday to sample the splendid sponges.

The competition was organised by Dan Webber, a fundraiser who has turned his attention this year raising money for mental health charity Mind.

It forms part of a packed events calender for Mr Webber under his Kick Off 4 Mental Health umbrella.

Among the three judges was chef Craig Sherrington.

The Ulverston chef and Great British Menu TV star, of Craig’s Kitchen at the Virginia House hotel, cast his expert eye over the entries.

The cakes put forward included a stunning burger-styled creation, which scored top marks for presentation from the judging panel.

But the winning entry was from Sophie Jackson, whose six biscuit-flavoured cupcakes were wolfed down by the judges.

And in keeping with the theme of the event they gave out a special message about mental health.

Mr Webber said: “All the judges really loved the taste of the cupcakes and didn’t leave any for anyone else.

“But I thought it was great that they summed up what I was trying to go for with this event.

“They were each flavoured as different biscuits and said we can always talk about things over a biscuit and a brew.”

The winner received a £200 ticket to experience Mr Sherrington’s Great British Menu.

In the junior category Kaitlyn O’Brien was crowned the winner.

After the winners were announced the cakes went on sale to buy.

The event raised £300 for Mind and was a successful afternoon, Mr Webber said.

“Lots of people took the Mind information leaflets that were available.

“I also heard a lot people talking about mental health, which is exactly what I want people to do.”

Mr Webber’s next event is Kick It in Barrow Park on Tuesday.
