A SCHOOL’s decision to ban its students from wearing fake tan has received a mixed reaction.

Ulverston Victoria High School, on Springfield Road, sent a text to parents saying students would be banned from wearing fake tan when they returned from their half term break on February 25.

The school has more than 1,300 pupils and caters for ages 11-18.

The text said: “We would like to advise you that from Monday 25th February, fake tan worn by students will no longer be acceptable.

“Wearing it will be considered an infringement of school uniform policy.

“We would be grateful if you could support us in this and reinforce it with your children.”

The ban received a mixed reaction from Mail readers on Facebook.

Roisin Doran said: “At last! A sensible decision! The students have got the next 70 years to dress themselves up like an Oompa Loompa, but at the moment they are children. Just let them be children.”

Charlotte Cooper agreed. She said: “Who needs fake tan to go to a lesson. It isn’t going to stop the learning.”

Gill Turner questioned the ban.

“Why, what reason?” she said. “Lots of kids have total body confidence issues, if a bit of fake tan makes them feel better about themselves then surely this helps with concentration?”

Katja Saskia Elizabeth said: “How does it affect their learning?

Trish Kendall said: “Would have thought secondary schools had bigger fish to fry than a bit of fake tan. I don’t think make-up should be encouraged at school as kids needs to learn to follow rules, but it’s hardly a priority.”

The school appointed a new headteacher, Matthew Hardwick, in December.

David Webster, the mayor of Ulverston, said: “If make-up is banned then this ban would be wholly in line with that.

“There have been a lot of changes at the school with a new headteacher. He will be putting his own policies in place along with the governors.”
