A PUB which has been in the same family for more than 30 years is raising a glass to a top accolade for the second year running.

The Manor Arms, at Broughton, has been named as the Campaign for Real Ale Group's Furness branch pub of the year.

The family-run pub, whose landlord is Scott Varty, is based on The Square.

He said: “We’re very pleased to be given this award for the second year in a row.

“It is always a surprise to win as you can never be certain.

“The staff have put a lot of work in so we’re very happy.

“Thank you very much to everyone who supported us and the brewers who supply our ales."

The award is decided by the CAMRA members who vote for their favourite pub.

Dave Latham, the secretary of Furness CAMRA, said: “The Manor Arms has consistently supplied real ale to a high standard for many years.

“The pub has been run by the Varty family for more than 30 years.

“It really is a terrific pub.”

CAMRA is a national organisation founded in 1971 by Michael Hardman, Graham Lees, Jim Makin and Bill Mellor, all from the north-west ,who were disillusioned by the domination of the UK beer market by a handful of companies pushing products of low flavour and overall quality onto the consumer.

Originally known as the Campaign for the Revitalisation of Ale, the group became known as the ‘Campaign for Real Ale’ in 1973.

The group now has over 183,000 members across the world and aims to promote real ale and pubs, as well as acting as a representative for the consumer in relation to the UK and European beer and drinks industry.
