THE Ulverston Golf Club groundsman and Morecambe Bay fisherman Raymond Porter took on an extra role in 1994 as a sand pilot.
The Mail, on January 11, noted that he had been chosen by the Kent and Leven charity trustees to take over from Alf Butler, who had died in 1993 after holding the post for 44 years.
It noted: “His duties will include guiding walkers between Canal Foot, Chapel Island and Sandgate Farm, near Flookburgh.”
The job came with rent-free accommodation at Levens House, at Canal Foot, Ulverston.
Mr Porter, from Ulverston, had been a fisherman at Bardsea and Baycliff over the past nine years.
