RENEWED efforts are being made to bring the first ever electric vehicle charging station to Barrow.

A new project by Charge My Street is assessing the feasibility of electric vehicle chargepoints around Cumbria and Barrow is on the list.

Despite places as close as Ulverston having multiple chargepoints Barrow is still yet to have one.

Daniel Heery, secretary for Charge my Street said: “We are looking for sites to host chargepoints and people who would be interested in having a chargepoint in their neighbourhood.

“One of our directors works in Barrow and is trying to identify potential locations to install charging points.

“We just need people on the ground prepared to support it and use them.

“As a non-profit organisation we are keen to improve air quality in the area and we are determined to keep plugging away to bring a charging station to Barrow.”

With air pollution exceeding limits set by the World Health Organisation in some parts of Cumbria and car manufacturers announcing plans to phase out dirty diesels, pressure is building to sort out charging infrastructure.

Barrow’s Council leader Dave Pidduck welcomed the project and showed interest to work in partnership with the social enterprise organisation. Cllr Pidduck said: “It is inevitable that Barrow will have its first chargepoint it is only a matter of time.

“We do however need to consider the costs of installing them and where exactly they are best suited to be placed.

“We recently held a meeting of our town centre group where we discussed how Barrow could adjust towards the introduction of electric vehicles and chargepoints.

“We are open to working in partnership with any social enterprise organisations if this is what it takes to bring a chargepoint to Barrow.”

Anyone who has interest can suggest chargepoint locations at www.chargemystreet.co.uk/cluster/cumbria.

There will also be an event to launch the Broughton chargepoints at Victory Hall, Broughton on Friday March 1 from 2-6pm for anyone interested in finding out more.
