A LANDSLIDE on the railway line has caused disruption to trains heading between Barrow and Carlisle.

A landslide on the railway line between Whitehaven and Workington has caused all trains to be cancelled between the two stations impacting on trains travelling along the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Northern Rail confirmed the incident on the Northern Assist Twitter account. 

A replacement bus service has been issued for stranded passengers between Workington and Whitehaven.

The 9am train from St. Bees to Carlisle is unable to continue from Whitehaven, passengers are awaiting a bus to transport them to Workington for a replacement train.

Also, large and powerful waves are expected to hit the coastlines of south Cumbria, sparking the government to release various flood alerts across the area.

As a result of Storm Erik the government’s Flood Information Service has put out flood alerts across North Morecambe Bay affecting parts of Barrow and Ulverston.

It has also put further warnings out across the west coast of Cumbria impacting on Millom.

Experts have warned residents to be cautions of flooding roads and land at high tide today between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Residents are also advised to avoid using roads and footpaths near the coast during this period and while the strong onshore winds are amplifying the effect of the high tide.

The Flood Information Service said it will provide an update to the situation this afternoon.
