A VILLAGE is celebrating the 200th birthday of one of the Lake District’s most famous residents.
John Ruskin spent the last 28 years of his life in Coniston, drawn by his love of the Lake District, its landscape and community.
And to celebrate his 200th birthday the village will be holding a huge celebration later this week.
The Ruskin Museum and Brantwood, in partnership with John Ruskin School, Coniston C of E Primary School, St Andrews Church, Coniston Institute and other community groups, will come together for a day of activities in the heart of the village on Friday.
There will be a whole range of activities for people to get involved in, from writing workshops, musical performances, a tea party and many more.
Leading on from the day of celebration, both Brantwood and The Ruskin Museum are also hosting exhibitions throughout the bicentennial year.
Helen Glaister, marketing and education development officer for the Coniston Institute and Ruskin Museum said: “Coniston is, and always has been, very proud of its heritage and John Ruskin is a very much a part of this.
"His legacy lives on in the village in so many ways.
“The community as a whole, young and old, have come together to plan and take part in his 200th birthday celebrations.
“It’ll be quite a day, one that I’m sure John Ruskin would have enjoyed.”
