THE death of a man who fell over at home and later died in hospital from pneumonia was ruled an accident by a coroner yesterday.

An inquest at Barrow Town Hall heard how Eric Tyson, 76, died at Furness General Hospital on August 29 last year.

His death came during a stint in hospital following a fall at home in which he hurt his head.

Mr Tyson, from Haverigg, had not long been out of Millom Hospital after receiving treatment for another fall when he fell again at home.

His wife Jo told the inquest he had been sleeping downstairs on medical advice because of back and breathing problems.

She told the hearing she had gone to bed upstairs when she heard a “bang”.

Ambulance staff said Mr Tyson had not remembered the fall and must have been knocked unconscious by it.

Assistant coroner Paul O’Donnell ruled Mr Tyson’s death ultimately an accidental one after he contracted pneumonia while in hospital for treatment.
