A WALNEY man has been ordered to pay almost £800 after he crashed into another car and left the scene without reporting the collision.

John Whittam, of Ramsgate Crescent, failed to show up at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after being charged with two offences.

Magistrates allowed the case to proceed and Whittam was found guilty.

The court heard the 56-year-old had reversed his Vauxhall Zafira into a parked Peugeot 307 in Cambridge Street in Barrow on October 14 of last year.

Whittam then left the scene and failed to report the collision.

He was fined a total of £660 and given six penalty points.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £44 surcharge.

Magistrates said the full amount of £789 owed to the court must be paid in full by February 13.
