COUNCIL bosses have reached an agreement to terminate the contract with a construction company tasked with building the Blue Light Hub.

Work on the £4.8m Blue Light Hub on the A590 ground to a halt in August 2018 amid issues between the main contractor Aspect Construction and Cumbria County Council.

Aspect claimed they had not paid them for unforeseen expenses but this was disputed by the council.

The project has been in limbo for the last five months while discussions were held between the two parties.

Last week The Mail revealed the council was looking to appoint a new main contractor and now it has been confirmed an agreement has been reached to end the contract with Aspect Construction.

Once a contract is in place the process to terminate it or for one party to declare it to be in default can be complex without the agreement of both parties.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said: “The council can confirm an agreement has been reached with the previous contractors regarding works at Ulverston Blue Light Hub.

“The council is now in the process of identifying a new contractor to resume the work, and works will recommence on site at the earliest opportunity.”

One of the main sub-contractors which worked on the Blue Light Hub for Aspect, Fylde Construction, has been left significantly out of pocket. Fylde was owed in the region of £100,000 by Aspect Construction.

Fylde Construction boss Barry Blyth revealed Aspect had offered a settlement around £75,000 less than the full amount owed.

“Because Aspect claimed they were due money from the council they then stopped paying us,” Mr Blyth said.

“When the job was pulled I still owed my own suppliers but I made sure we paid everyone even though it meant we were even more out of pocket.

“I had around 15 lads working on the job but I made sure they were paid too.”

The Mail has made several, repeated attempts to contact Aspect Construction but they have failed to respond.
