THERE was no reason for cheer for regulars at Ulverston’s Braddylls Arms 10 years ago as the Market Place pub served its last pints.

Vanessa Fleming and partner Steve closed the doors on Thursday, January 2, in 2009 due to a combination of utility bills, rates, the smoking ban, council tax and rising beer prices.

Brewers Enterprise Inns indicated it would not seek a new leaseholder and the building was eventually converted into apartments.

Back in September 1997 the new patrons at the Braddylls Arms were Sue Guttridge and Kevin Slater, from Saddleworth, near Oldham.

Sue was a barmaid and Kevin had been an architect for 20 years.

The Braddylls, then owned by Whitbread, was their first pub.

Susan said: “We fell in love with the place immediately.”

She said: “The town is lovely and the people are so friendly.”

They were keen to develop darts, dominoes and pool at the pub.
