A RESIDENT warden is being sought to look after one of the most important bird colonies in the region.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is recruiting a warden for Foulney Island.

The contract will start in April and run for 16 weeks depending on the breeding season.

The job involves a 42-hour week and responsibilities include monitoring breeding terns, waders and ducks, carrying out nest protection duties and producing an end of season report.

The advert states: "This exciting role will see you responsible for one of the most important tern nesting colonies in the North West.

"Good communication skills and knowledge of coastal birds are therefore essential. Previous warden experience is desirable but not essential."

The position will pay £1,494 per month and even provides accommodation.

Foulney Island is chosen by breeding terns which travel vast distances to nest on the island's shingle banks including arctic, common and little tern.
