A GIFT shop in Ulverston is set to close down its store by next month and move everything online to keep up with the times.

Geek Goods, based on New Market Street, has faced a difficult 12 months in what has been a tough year for retailers.

In 2018 HMV, Toys R Us, Poundworld and Maplin all went into administration.

Karen Wilkinson, owner of Geek Goods said the retail industry has had a turbulent year.

She said: "I would say last year was a very difficult trading environment for retail.

"We always do well at Christmas because people are looking for gifts and I was hoping the festive season would give us a boost to keep us going.

"But we did not get what he needed to continue and we have to close.

"Retail in general in this country has struggled a lot this past year."

Geek Goods will close next month but Miss Wilkinson will move her business online.

She said retailers are moving online and admitted she has to do the same to keep up with the times.

"I think a lot more people are shopping online because you can get more of a variety and the prices are so varied," she said.

"A lot of people don't have their overheads on when they shop online and they can find things a little bit cheaper."

She added: "I will turn my attention to the online aspect of the business and create a real push.

"All my products that are in store will be available online.

"We are not shutting down completely but we are closing the shop.

"I haven't really pushed online so far because I wanted the shop to be successful, but that will have to change."

Miss Wilkinson set up her business six years ago.

She started out working at craft fairs and Ulverston market before setting up the Geek Goods shop three years ago.

"They have been challenging but it has been fun," she said.

"It has been fantastic, I have loved every second of it and I have met some great people.

"It's been a fabulous experience and I would certainly do it all over again.

"My plans are to take a step back and concentrate on building the website.

"The shop will be closing next month but I have not got an actual date.

"Never say never, we could be back in the future."
