THE story of water transport starts a new series of talks by the Coniston Local History Group and to mark it we are taking a look at a few village images from The Mail’s picture archive.

On Monday, January 21, Diana Matthews will give a presentation called Log Boats to Edwardian Steamboats.

It starts at 2.30pm in the history group's regular venue at the John Ruskin Institute on Yewdale Road, Coniston. All are welcome.

On February 18 Sarah Lace is the speaker on the topic of stained glass in South Lakeland.

Recent restoration work at the Coniston and Tilberthwaite copper mines is the topic for John Pickin on March 18.

Dr Rob David looks at Eastern influences in Cumbria with a talk called An Oriental Mirage on April 15.

Allison Peak will talk about The Big House on May 20 and on June 17 June Hill will take a look at traditional buildings in Cumbria in a talk called Out of the Ground.

The talk on July 15 is by Margaret Dickinson with the title Lady Anne Clifford, High Sheriff of Westmorland.

Anglian and Norse Crosses in Cumbria is the topic for Judith Horsley on September 16.

Alastair Cameron looks at the history of the Honister slate mine on October 21 and on November 18 Maurice Steele is the guest speaker with a look at the River Eden from its source to the sea.
