STUDENTS at a school have been getting creative by building their own robot.

Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School have been busy preparing for the First Lego League which is set to take place at Furness College this week.

As part of their preparation, the children had to build and programme their own robot out of Lego. The robot had to be able to manoeuvre around various obstacles.

Laura Reid, Maths and ICT Coordinator at Ormsgill School, said: “The Lego League sent us a mat with a set out track on which the children had to build obstacles for the robot to get past.

“They programmed the robot and it had to be able to get past the obstacles as well as a number of other tasks.

“This year the focus of the project was space.”

Ormsgill School was sponsored to join the Lego League this year by International Nuclear Services (INS).

The project is designed to encourage students to get involved with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects.

Talking about the importance of STEM subjects at Ormsgill, Mrs Reid said: “STEM subjects are a key part of our curriculum.

“We want to get children inspired and wanting to get involved in these subjects.

“We’re grateful for the support from INS.”

She went on to say how much the children have enjoyed building their own robot out of Lego.

She said: “Being able to use the Lego was a massive hook for the children.

“They were really keen to get involved.

“It really get’s the best out of each child and enables them to see how STEM subjects can allow them to be creative in their learning.

“It was very popular when we announced it.

“We had more than enough volunteers to fill the 10 spots in the team.

“We’re hoping to enter again next year and build on the experiences of the children involved the first time round.”

The First Lego League takes place at Furness College on Wednesday.

This year's theme is Into Orbit, focussing on space.
