THIS week has seen the start of snooker’s Masters event at the Alexandra Palace, London, so we have turned the clock back 25 years to the day when Barrow's Andy Baynes beat reigning world champion Stephen Hendry.
A packed Barrow Leisure Centre was the scene for the Mail's snooker champion to pip Hendry on the final black ball in a special single-frame challenge.
The painter and decorator from Parker Street said: "Before I came here people were stopping me in the town, people I didn't really know, saying 'all the best tonight, get him beat'.
"It hasn't really sunk in yet.
"To me it was just a bonus to play him, but to win, I am delighted. I would love to turn professional."
The Mail on January 17 in 1994 noted that Hendry was joined by former world champion Dennis Taylor for an exhibition match.
