A SCHOOL is getting active as part of a national campaign to combat mental health difficulties.

Walney School are running away the "January Blues" by taking part in RED January, a scheme that recognises the life-changing benefits that physical activity can have on our minds and bodies.

Therefore, both the pupils and staff will be getting active every single day, not only to help improve mental health, but to also raise as much money as they can for the mental health charity Mind.

Hayley Preston, who is one of the staff leading it, said: "After seeing it advertised we decided to open it up as a whole school activity. The Ninja Warrior club are running or walking a mile every day after school. The pupil support department have an activity every morning, including dance and chair exercises.

"The Library is running an activity every day too, which has included running, dancing, stretches and lunges while balancing books."

Alongside this, the school will also be carrying out craft activities, making red hearts with positive messages attached, which will be given to Mind at a prize giving assembly in February. The staff as well will be carrying out their own challenges.

When asked how the children have responded to the scheme, Miss Preston said: "We have all been blown away by the level of enthusiasm by the students to get involved. The students have really taken the project to heart and lots have asked us to continue the activities after January, which we plan on doing. A special mention to the staff too who are getting involved and keeping the students motivated."

One student, Lucy said: "It makes me feel good because I am helping people who need it and I’m also getting fit while having fun. We are also making crafts and thinking of positive messages." Another student Caitlyn said: "When Miss explained it to us I didn’t have to think twice about doing it. I love to think I am making others happy."
