A FORMER gas terminal office became a new community centre for North Scale on Walney Island back in 1996.
The Mail, on Wednesday, October 16, noted: "Edith Aked, who has lived in North Scale for 82 years, shared the honour of officially opening the first community centre.
"Mrs Aked, of Combe View, and veteran Walney councillor Edie Garside snipped the ribbon signalling the start of celebrations for residents, which included a children's party and social evening for adults.
"More than 100 people turned up for the opening and saw a video chronicling the transformation of the former gas terminal site office since it was bought by North Scale Residents' Association."
Planned activities at the new centre included line dancing, keep fit and indoor bowling.
Association treasurer Des Barlow said: "Everyone thinks it is marvellous. It's all been worth while and it makes me feel really proud, especially when you see it's going to be well used."
