A YOUNG couple who were caught with cannabis in their home have been clean for almost a year in a bid to keep their baby.

Police searched the home of Robbie Mack Archer and Brittany Serene Holmes in Mardale Grove on March 23 of last year.

At South Cumbria Magistrates' Court on Wednesday prosecutor Diane Jackson described how police found drugs and drug paraphernalia at the property.

"They found a plastic box containing 24 wraps of cannabis, a silver iPhone, £10 in cash, a SIM card, weighing scales and a 'debt list'," she said.

"It was considered whether there was evidence of intent to supply however police are satisfied this was a simple possession."

The pair were arrested and taken to Barrow Police Station.

Holmes, 19, refused to comment in her interview but in his interview Archer, also 19, admitted he used "an awful lot of cannabis", Mrs Jackson told the court.

She added: "He said he has a joint as soon as he wakes up and then smokes all day."

The court was told the couple, who live at Steamer Street, have a four-month-old child.

Defence solicitor Mike Graham said: "They have been subject to regular drug testing in order to keep their child and both of them have been clean.

"At the time of the offence Mr Archer's life was chaotic but he has turned his life around."

Archer was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £30 surcharge. Holmes was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 surcharge.
