IN 1996 workers were on the second stage of a three-year project to give Ulverston's Honeypot estate a £4.7m facelift which included an upgrade of houses and environmental improvements.

The Mail, on September 13, gave an update of progress and followed officials from South Lakeland District Council as they inspected the work.

Senior clerk of works on the site, John Curwen, said 192 homes were being repainted and fitted with new kitchens, central heating and double glazing.

The article noted: "Tenants are able to select their own floor covering and colour schemes."

Housing chairman Bob Bolton, of Ulverston, said around £20,000 was being spent on each house.

Area housing manager, Neil Oxley, said: "We are hoping to have finished the whole estate towards the end of the next financial year."
