THERE was a growing demand in the 1990s for out-of hours clubs at Furness schools where you could follow hobbies or pick up new skills.

The Mail, on September 21, noted: "North Walney Primary School pupils are managing to expand their clubs.

"Children come in early to take part in one club, have another at lunchtime and then return in the afternoon for yet more activities.

"A recent rollerskating club started in the school grounds and attracted more than 40 children.

"The school now has 12 different clubs."

They ranged from needlecraft and knitting to hockey.

At Haverigg Primary School, near Millom, choices ranged from guitar, choir and recorder to gymnastics, soccer and netball.
