THE four crew members on a goods train had to jump to safety before their train crashed into a wagon and a set of buffers at the Ulverston railway station goods yard.
The front page of The Mail, on Monday, November 18, in 1968, noted: "The train, 15 wagons of mixed traffic hauled by a diesel locomotive, was approaching Ulverston from Lindal when it went out of control down a steep incline.
"A spokesman for British Railways at Preston said the locomotive's brakes were believed to have failed."
The men who jumped to safety were driver, Colin Beck, of The Strand, Barrow; Mr W.Dixon, of Yealand Drive; Mr A.Wallace, of Newton Road, Dalton and Stan Boydell, of Queen Street, Dalton.
They were not injured.
The article noted: "Seconds later the train ploughed into a stationary wagon which was against the buffers."
A spokesman for British Railways said: "It pushed the wagon up over a loading platform and continued on, ending on top of the platform."
He said there would be an internal inquiry into the crash.
