TWO people wanted by police on suspicion of shoplifting were arrested after they bumped into cops on a community policing visit to Ormsgill.

Community Inspector Jim Bailey visited Ormsgill yesterday (New Year’s Eve) on his trusty police bicycle as part of Operation Stratagem.

The operation is part of a campaign to spend more time in the local community and meet with youngsters.

Insp Bailey revealed during the visit he had “run into a few wanted people”.

Police have now confirmed two people have been charged and are due to appear in court.

“What started off with some #communityengagement and happy new year wishes on Ormsgill ended with two arrests,” the inspector said.

“It was great meeting the local kids and they loved following me around as I ran into a few wanted people.

“The wanted people are off the streets and will more than likely see the new year in in a cell. Also big thanks to unit 3 for helping and the local residents.

“Have a great new year and stay safe.”

Kerry Mallett of Longway has been charged in connection with four shoplifting offences and has been bailed to attend South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on January 23.

Marc Whitehead, 42, of Millbank, was charged in connection with the theft of razor blades from Asda and has been bailed to attend court on January 16.

Inspector Bailey added: “Ormsgill is a priority area and we working with all our partners and the community to make it even better. The project has the operation name of Op Stratagem (We don't choose them).

“Another community meeting willl be held in the new year. Come along and get involved.”
