A BRAVE grandma took a dip on New Year's Day alongside her three grandchildren in a bid to raise money for charity.

Alfie Coxon, 15, along with his younger siblings Lillie, eight, and 10-year-old Freddie, braved the chilly waters of the Irish Sea on New Year's Day.

Their grandma Brenda also joined them in their attempt to raise money for the Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group in memory of Jake Ellis.

Youngest sibling Ruarie was unable to get wet because of a broken elbow but cheered them on with his hooter.

Since Jake died of rhabdomyosarcoma in 2008 his parents Jo-Ann and Nick have fundraised in his memory for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.

Family and friends have undertaken fundraising events including the annual Jake Ellis Charity Ball, London to Paris Cycle Challenge, the Great North Run, and the Keswick to Barrow walk.

A decade on from his tragic death at the age of five his supporters have helped to raise more than £200,000.

Fewer than 60 children are diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, which causes tumours to grow in the soft tissue, in the UK each year. Most are younger than 10.

Although there are some genetic conditions and risk factors which increase a child's chance of developing rhabdomyosarcoma in most cases the cause is not known.
