A BARROW man has pledged to complete a mammoth physical challenge to raise money for a local hospice in memory of his grandmother.

Adam Harrison, 29, from Walney Island, has been completing a marathon a day for the last two weeks.

He has been rowing or skiing 42,195m each day since December 19, in an effort to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice.

The staff at St Mary’s supported Adam and his family when they were told his grandmother, Diane Williams, had stage four lung cancer and the condition was terminal.

Adam, who works away from home as a Wind Turbine Technician, flew back from Australia and was able to spend some time with his grandma before she died on Nov 2.

St Mary’s cared for Adam’s grandmother for 14 days before her death.

This inspired Adam to complete a 14 day challenge in an effort to raise money for the hospice.

He said: “Me and my nanna were ver close, my mum was very close with her as well.

“It was a shock when we found out.

“At first she thought she just had a chest infection, we thought she was perfectly fine.

“Then it turned out to be stage 4 lung cancer and they couldn’t offer her any sort of treatment

“It was at this point I flew home and was able to spend some time with my nanna before she died.”

Talking about the challenge, Adam said: “It’s been hard work, I’ve never attempted a marathon before, so just completing one was an achievement.”

“But compared to all the people at St Mary’s who go through so much more and the staff who look after them day in and day out.

“In the broad spectrum of it all, me sweating in the gym for a day is nothing.

“They do a brilliant job at St Mary's, so this was my way of saying Thankyou.”

Adam is grateful to everyone who has supported him.

He said:”The support has been phenomenal.

“Not just the donations, so many people helped in different ways, too many to name.

“Even on Christmas day, I was taken back by how many people came to support me.

“Everyone has really come together to give their support.

“Without their help I wouldn’t have been able to get through it.

“So thank you to everyone who supported me throughout.

"A special thank you to the guys at the Box Gym and Cumbria Strength and Conditioning where I've completed most of my marathons."
