BIG changes which have taken place in law and order through the decades went on show to members of the public in the 1980s.
In September 1987 Cumbria Constabulary held an open day in the Coronation Hall with plenty of police memorabilia, displays and demonstrations.
The town's deputy mayoress, Bernice Newby, took a breathaliser test from PC Dave Webster and plenty of youngsters took the opportunity to inspect a BMW police motorcycle.
There were also first aid tips and a demonstration of modern equipment by Jeff Barr from the ambulance service.
In September 1988 the police went a step further and threw open the doors of the town's police station to give people a chance to see the cells, view hats and badges and find out what is like to be fingerprinted.
The event was staged as part of the town's annual market charter week celebrations.
