A FURNESS town is the star of a documentary by an American tourist who visited in search of his relative’s birthplace.

Jeff Hodges made the 4000-mile trip from his hometown of Nashville to visit Dalton in an attempt to explore the town his grandad emigrated from in 1928.

The documentary is titled Finding Lancelot in reference to Mr Hodges’ granddad Robert Lancelot Scott.

Mr Scott moved to the USA around the age of 18 to find job opportunities in Detroit.

Mr Hodges made the video with his friend Glenn Sweitzer for his mum’s 75th birthday.

The trip saw them visit the town hall to meet the mayor of Dalton, Cllr Sam Ronson and Cllr Ann Thurlow, who filled him on the history behind his grandfather’s native town.

They also took the opportunity to visit the local archives in search of the town that would have been Mr Scott’s home.

After they ventured to the historic Furness Abbey and Dalton Castle.

Cllr Ronson said: “I was really pleased to get a message from somebody so far away wanting to visit our little northern town, and I was excited for them to see it.

“I thought they portrayed the town really well, and they’ve said to me many times since that they were overwhelmed by just how welcoming people here were.

“I’d gone out of my way to help them and everybody they met was really interested in their story and keen to help however they could, usually providing information or local history.

"Overall, I’m incredibly happy with the finished video and it’s been a privilege to have been a part of it.

“I really feel now like I have some very good friends in Nashville.”

Writing on their YouTube channel, the documentary pair said: “We met the most incredible people in the small town of Dalton-In-Furness, and they were nothing more than gracious and hospitable.

“In these days we live in, it’s a special feeling to make new family from afar.”
