A Barrow Leisure Centre has undergone a major £1.25 million revamp and is set to re-open with new facilities for customers.

Life Leisure Barrow Park (formally Park Leisure Centre) was placed under the management of Life Leisure, in August by Barrow Borough Council.

Life Leisure is an award winning not-for-profit social enterprise.

The leisure centre on Greengate Street has since been fitted with new facilities including a brand new spin studio and a larger gym.

The investment has enabled the leisure centre to employ more staff and offer more sports sessions for both adults and children, as well as additional support for members in the form of personal training and fitness courses.

Malcolm McPhail, Life Leisure’s CEO, said: “We are delighted to unveil a fantastic new range of services at Life Leisure Barrow Park which are open to all, no matter what your personal fitness levels are.

“Our vision revolves around improving people’s lives by providing high quality facilities and inclusive access for everyone, including disadvantaged individuals and communities.

“We are confident we will step up levels of healthy activity across the town.”

The new spin studio will be open from Saturday, December 15, and the larger gym from Thursday, December 20.

Life Leisure Barrow Park will be open 6am - 10pm Monday to Thursday, 6am - 8pm on Friday, and 8am - 5pm at the weekend.

Councillor Derek Brook spoke to The Mail about his hopes for the leisure centre. He said: "The council are hoping the refurbishment will really increase participation the leisure centre.

"By investing in the facilities, Life Leisure are making a real effort to get more people in the area active, which is what we at the council want.

"It's about getting the most out of the space we have and offering a variety of things that appeals to everyone of all abilities.

"Before Life Leisure took over, we were looking in to offering sessions like walking football and gym sessions specifically designed for older adults and Life have been very supportive of this.

"We also want to offer cancer care sessions.

"It's all about getting more people involved in sport and healthy activities.”
