SENIOR councillors will meet the brewery behind a village's much-loved pub to discuss its future tomorrow (Tuesday).

Councillors and community members will meet with members of Robinson’s Brewery to raise concerns of the future of The Derby Arms.

‘The Derby’, which serves the locals of Great Urswick, closed yesterday.

A petition has been launched by the local community and has received over 270 signatures.

Councillors and locals want the building to be kept as a pub in the long term.

Jo Ritchie, chairman of Urswick Events Committee, wants the public to get behind the petition.

She said: “We are asking people sign our petition to stop our pub being closed down. The Derby Arms means a lot to this community and we don’t want it to be shut for good.

“The pub has raised a lot of money for the local area down the years and we need all the support we can get to help The Derby Arms.”

A spokesperson on behalf of Robinsons Said: “At Robinsons we have a policy to support our community and local pubs.

“We have worked closely with our licensee over the past year and supported them where possible.

“Upon their request we have accepted early termination of their tenancy.

“Our company are now reviewing the business potential at the property.

“We have engaged with the Parish Council and members of the local community and have agreed to meet with a District and County Councillor, Parish Councillor and spokesperson for the community.

“The meeting will take place on Tuesday 11th December to discuss the concerns of the local community.”
