MILLOM Labour Party is doing all it can to support its local foodbank during the tough winter months.

Each month, the party have been holding collections to donate what they can to help with the rising demand for basic food and supplies.

The Millom base at Crown Street Baptist Church Hall is on the lookout for any tinned food, animal food and basic toiletries.

The Mail's 'Feed our Foodbank' campaign is bidding to make sure no person in Barrow, Furness, Ulverston or Millom goes hungry this winter.

According to Barrow foodbank bosses, volunteers give out six and a half tonnes of food every month to those in need.

And as the effects of the Universal Credit rollout begin to show they expect a 31 per cent increase in demand.

Ralph Tilby, a member of Millom's Labour Party, said The Mail’s campaign is strongly backed by Labour.

He said: “We would like to thank The Mail for their campaign on behalf of local foodbanks.

“With the roll out of Universal Credit, it is likely to bring even greater hardship to those who are already in need.

“Millom Labour Party have a duty to look after the general public, and our members are committed to doing all they can to help in whatever way they can.”

Mr Tilby said the possibility of families going hungry over the festive period is unacceptable.

He has urged anyone who can help to do so to ensure everyone gets fed this Christmas.

He said: “There is nothing more important to help people with the basic needs in life.

“Nobody should go hungry during Christmas, and it is even more heartbreaking when children are involved.

“This is where the community can come together to help each other through Christmas and the winter months.

“Our Labour Group collects food every month from our members, which is growing, to help people.

“We just help with what we can.”
